The Liberty City CDC Summer Camp takes place in June of each year. The 2018 session at the Israelite Baptist Church site will operate Monday through Friday for four weeks, June 4-29, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Before and after care are available at an additional charge. Parents must register children in advance. Registration is a one time fee of $75.00 which includes the cost of field trips and one (1) camp t-shirt. Additional t-shirts are available at a cost of $15.00.
Daily camp schedule at both sites:
8 – 9 AM: Breakfast
9 AM – 12 PM: Academic instruction
12 – 1 PM: Lunch
1 PM – End of day: Enrichment activities.
Academic instruction is led by certified elementary teachers assisted by college interns and trained volunteers. Students are grouped by age and ability, and rotate through math, reading, social studies, writing and computer instruction. Study Island, Voyager Time Warp, and other research-based curricula are utilized. Enrichment activities are facilitated by the on-site program director, and are supervised by a certified teacher supplemented by high school and college volunteers. The afternoon begins with a group circle and includes warm-up and ice-breaker activities, which help to center and connect the group. From there, children choose from a variety of multidisciplinary enrichment and recreational activities identified in part from parent and child exit surveys. Activities include gardening, arts, crafts, games, reading groups, targeted tutoring, sports, cheerleading, and yoga. Each Friday, children participate in outings and picnic lunches at the finest venues in the city including the Zoo, Aquarium, Imax, Audubon Nature Center, Children’s Museum, Preservation Resource Center and WDSU-TV. The Summer Camp session concludes with an open house celebration of student accomplishments. Parents and the community-at-large are invited to participate in a variety of hands-on activities acknowledging student achievements.
Participants in the Summer Camp program are provided with transportation and receive Breakfast and Lunch free of charge through Summer Meal Service.
